3 goals for Labate?

I prefer to look at it as 3 goals in his last 4 games (GP 4 G 3 A 1 P 4)! --- the previous 12 games with zero goals was a pretty disappointing start to his sophomore season.

Saturday Jan 5

Big night for a few of the Canuck prospects!

AHL

Grand Rapids 4 Chicago 3 (SO)
Climie 21 saves on 24 shots

Kassian, (7) (Ebbett, Hunt) (PP)
Ebbett, (7) (Hunt, Sterling) (PP)
Matheson, (4) (Kassian, Joslin)

Shootout:
Sterling stopped by McCollum
Jurco stopped by Climie
Haydar shoots and scores
Smith loses control and gets a weak attempt, Climie with the save
Schroeder stopped
Nyquist - glove save Climie
Kassian stopped by McCollum's glove
Ferraro barely stopped by Climie
Ebbett missed the net
Tatar scores to extend the shootout
Davies saved by McCollum
Billins scores - Wolves lose.

They mentioned that the nagging injury Kassian has that kept him out of Thursday's game is a bad back... after seeing a chiropractor, he is back in the lineup tonight.

ECHL

Evansville 3 Kalamazoo 7
Anthony 1 assist, even
Mallet 1 goal (4th), 3 assists, +2 (selected 2nd star)
Polasek 0 points, even
Rai did not play

NCAA

Sacred Heart 0 Colgate 9
Price 1 assist, +5

Mercyhurst 5 Maine 2
Hutton 0 points, -1

Wisconsin 1 Alaska Anchorage 0
Labate 1 assist, +1

QMJHL

Cape Breton 0 Moncton 4
Honzik 23 saves on 27 saves, pulled in the 3rd at 4-0 (Trudeau 5 saves on 5 shots)

OHL

Kitchener 2 London 3
McEneny 0 points, +1

Sault Ste. Marie 2 Belleville 6
Gaunce 2 goals (14th, 15th), 2 assists, +3 (selected 1st star)

The deal for Graovac paying dividends right away as Graovac plays on a line with Gaunce and gets 1 goal and 3 assists (3rd star)...
67s deal Graovac to Bulls

Boy, the Wolves just keep on winning, eh. Nice to see our two apparent top prospects in Chicago get some goals finally. Just maybe, Schroeder just might get into the Top 100 in scoring on the AHL scoring leaders list after tonight. Kassian has about 30 names to jump to get into that category.

Nice night for Gaunce. Still holding out hope that Gaunce, Jensen and Corrado may save the day for ol' Gillis there, there rest are complete shite. I mean, Rodin, what a superstar. Where is Mallet?

Mallet? 4 goals and 3 assists in last 6 ECHL games.
Gaunce? 6 goals and 6 assists in his last 7 games.
Schroeder? 2 goals, 2 assists in his last 4 games. (they changed Schroeder's goal to Matheson from last night's game, or he'd have another)
Kassian? 1 goal, 5 assists in his last 4 games.

Things are looking up.

Sunday Jan 6

AHL

Oklahoma City 3 Chicago 6
Climie 43 saves on 46 shots

Gordon, (7) (Sterling)
Joslin, (1) (Matheson, Friesen)
Hunt, (2) (Haydar, Sterling) (PP)
Sterling, (10) (Haydar)
Joslin, (2)
Gordon, (8) (EN/SH)

I feel sorry for Chicago fans that bought a ticket to see Justin Schultz, Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins --- not in the lineup --- and they also won't see Chris Tanev, Zack Kassian, Jordan Schroeder, or Andrew Ebbett.

Connauton, Rodin, Sweatt, Gordon, Desbiens, Archibald, Friesen, S. Schneider, Joslin, and Andersson still in the lineup. Don't know about Sauve, Pinizzotto (injured), Mullen (injured), or Lack (injured).

OHL

Sudbury 5 Mississauga 4
Corrado 1 goal (6th), +2

Kassian has 20 points in 28 games.

His total body of work at the AHL level is 22-24-46 in 58 games. Very solid production for a guy projected as a second liner with size and toughness and not a first line scorer.

Listen Potluck, I like Kassian but I had expected him to be in the top 50 in scoring in the AHL and not on the outside of 100 looking in.

This, I agree with, however, I think it's a combination of not having line mates who work well with him and a coaching system which doesn't lend itself to Kassian's strengths. I don't consider 20 points in 28 games to be a failure. Disappointing - yeah.

Having watched him a lot this season, there are two "flaws" I see with Kassian that hopefully he will work to change:

1) He doesn't seem driven. He seems to take a carefree attitude towards his job, whereas I would like to see him bear down and take advantage of his size and strength to dominate and embarrass weaker opponents... and enjoy it.
2) He seems to abandon physical play to try to make fancy passes - reminds me a lot of Bertuzzi. I believe he needs to continue to deliver the physical play - hits on the forecheck, fights to protect linemates, and standing in front of the net (of which, to be fair, he has done a decent job)

I think the best thing for Kassian would be to fall into a designated physical/playmaking role on a line like what happened to Clark Gillies playing with Trottier and Bossy --- I think if the role is obvious and successful, he will take to it and excel.

Looks like the same coach that cut Corrado from the WJC just traded for him, he'll be joining McEneny and the Kitchener Rangers.
